Say goodbye to your double chin and hello to a sculpted, defined, and youthful jawline with Kybella®. Over time, the sharp contours of the lower face can soften, replaced by pockets of stubborn fat—particularly under the chin. Excess fat in this area, influenced by aging, genetics, and lifestyle, can diminish the natural definition of the jawline. Kybella® targets and eliminates these fat cells, helping you restore the angular, contoured profile that enhances the overall balance and beauty of your face.

What Is Kybella®?

Kybella® is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment that targets and destroys fat cells under the chin to improve your profile. It is designed for adults with moderate to severe submental fullness—commonly referred to as a double chin.

The treatment is non-surgical, requiring no numbing cream, and typically takes 15–20 minutes per session. Most patients need a series of injections spaced about one month apart, with 2–6 sessions depending on individual needs. Many see noticeable results after three treatments.

How Does Kybella® Work?

The active ingredient in Kybella® is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a molecule naturally found in the body that helps break down dietary fat. When injected into submental fat, Kybella® permanently destroys fat cells, which the body naturally eliminates over several weeks.

Each session involves multiple small injections under the chin. Mild burning, stinging, or a tightening sensation may occur but typically subsides within 15 minutes. Once destroyed, the fat cells cannot store fat again, providing long-lasting, defined results.

Treatment Areas

Kybella® is FDA-approved for submental fat but is also used off-label for other stubborn fatty areas, including:

  • Jowls

  • Bra line (between bra and armpit)

  • Knees

  • Arms

  • Love handles and hips

  • Banana rolls

  • Pinchable fat anywhere on the body

Benefits of Kybella®

  • Non-surgical and minimally invasive: No incisions, sutures, or downtime

  • Targets hard-to-reduce fat: Eliminates submental fullness that diet and exercise alone may not address

  • Long-lasting results: Destroyed fat cells do not return

  • Enhances jawline and lower-face contour: Creates a sharper, more youthful profile

Kybella® provides a safe, effective, and convenient alternative to surgical procedures, delivering dramatic, natural-looking results.

The most common side effects of Kybella are minor short-term pain, numbness, swelling, redness, bruising, and hardness at the injection site. These symptoms resolve on their own once the healing process is initiated. Most patients don't experience any significant risks with Kybella. However, there are some to be aware of, including:Nerve injury in the jaw (which can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness)Trouble swallowingInjection site problems like bruising, hair loss, open sores (ulcers), damage, and tissue cell-death (necrosis) around the injection site.

The effects of Kybella are permanent. Once Kybella destroys the fat cells under the chin, the cells cannot regenerate or regrow. Therefore, the area can no longer store or accumulate fat.
The ideal Kybella candidate is someone with a fair amount of submental fat. When the fat is more genetic than weight-related, Kyeblla tends to give a better effect, although it works for both causes. Skin tone also influences the result. Those with younger, more elastic skin that snaps back into place typically have less sagging and excess skin. Removing fat from under the chin can cause already loose skin to appear even looser.

Immediately following a Kybella treatment, there will be some swelling, bruising, and numbness under your chin. It's also normal for the area to puff up and lose any definition for the short term as the injectable fat-fighting abilities go to work. The swelling, which is an indication that Kybella is working, is often the worst at the 24-hour mark and can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. However, with each following treatment, the swelling, numbness, and bruising will become less and less since there is subsequently less fat to treat.
