Microneedling: Professional Skin Rejuvenation You Can’t Take Lightly

Microneedling is a highly popular procedure, but it’s not something to take lightly. While at-home microneedling rollers may help improve skin tone and texture, professionally-administered treatments like SkinPen Microneedling deliver dramatic, long-lasting results. Understanding the process and benefits is key before committing to treatment.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a professional skin-rejuvenating procedure designed to stimulate collagen production, improving skin health, texture, and appearance. By creating controlled micro-injuries in the skin, it jumpstarts the body’s natural healing process, helping to reduce wrinkles, fine lines, scars, and sun damage.

At L’amour MedSpa, we use the SkinPen Microneedling device, which quickly inserts tiny needles at precise depths to create micro-channels in the skin. These channels allow serums and treatment ingredients to penetrate deeply for maximum results. As your skin heals over days and weeks, it becomes smoother, plumper, and more youthful.

Benefits of Microneedling

Microneedling offers a wide range of benefits, making it suitable for everything from acne scars to hair restoration. Immediate post-treatment results include a radiant, dewy glow, which continues to improve over time with repeated sessions. Key benefits include:

  • Plumper, healthier-looking skin

  • Stimulation of dormant hair follicles to promote hair growth

  • Reduction in the appearance of scars and acne scars

  • Increased collagen production

  • Diminished fine lines, wrinkles, and mild sun damage

  • Improved skin texture

  • Reduction of stretch marks

  • Minimized appearance of enlarged pores

  • Improved skin tone and discoloration

Treatment Areas

Microneedling can be used from head to toe. Common treatment areas include:

  • Full face (except directly on lips or eyelids)

  • Neck wrinkles

  • Acne scars

  • Scalp for hair growth stimulation

  • Areas with stretch marks

  • Scars on legs, chest, or arms

Cost of SkinPen Microneedling

Costs vary depending on the provider, location, and whether PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is included. On average, a single session costs around $400 or more. To determine the best treatment plan and cost for your skin concerns, schedule a consultation to create a customized program.

How Microneedling Differs From Other Treatments

SkinPen microneedling stimulates new collagen production without the downtime associated with lasers. Unlike lasers, it does not ablate the skin and is safe for a wide range of skin types and tones.

  • Injectables and fillers: Fill lines and wrinkles, while microneedling smooths the skin’s surface to reduce their appearance.

  • Lasers: Offer stronger skin-tightening effects, whereas microneedling is gentler and safer for various skin types.

  • IPL (Intense Pulsed Light): Targets sun spots and discoloration; microneedling can complement IPL for holistic skin brightening.

Some patients benefit from combination approaches, such as microneedling with lasers or chemical peels, depending on their skin goals.

Standard SkinPen Microneedling

Standard microneedling uses a motorized pen to create hundreds of microscopic, controlled wounds at a depth of up to 2.5 millimeters. These micro-injuries stimulate the skin’s healing response, improving texture, tone, and overall skin quality. No additional infusions or treatments are used in this standard version.

Microneedling + PRP (“Vampire Facial”)

Combining microneedling with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) enhances collagen production and improves results for more challenging skin concerns. This combination:

  • Boosts skin tone and radiance

  • Reduces fine lines, wrinkles, and sunspots

  • Improves acne scars more effectively than microneedling alone

This treatment is ideal for those seeking advanced skin rejuvenation and a more youthful, refreshed appearance.

Yes, the skin will emerge pink or red following microneedling. Adding PRP to microneedling will leave the skin with pinpoint bleeding. The redness will subside in the first 24 hours after microneedling, and by day two, the skin may look flushed or slightly pink, which will continue to fade in the next few days. It may also feel somewhat tight or dry and flaked off during the first few days after microneedling. Keep in mind that the more aggressive the microneedling treatment and the more healing the skin endures, the more redness ensues.

Since the skin is 'open,' it's best to follow a simple, bland regimen and take a break from acids and exfoliating ingredients and products, including harsh cleansers, scrubs, and exfoliating masks and cleansers, too. Likewise, it’s best to avoid supercharged actives like vitamins A and C, retinol and retinoids, glycolic and salicylic acids, and fragranced skincare products until your provider gives you the green light to resume using them.  It’s best to stick to gentle, healing moisturizers and ointments, a simple hyaluronic acid serum, and sunscreen during the healing phase. Moisture is key to healthy healing.

The more basic the microneedling treatment is, the shorter and less intense the recovery is. For example, more intense microneedling RF treatments can leave the skin red and swollen for a few days, if not longer, depending on the device used. Overall, the skin may look and feel rough, slightly red or pink, or sensitive for the first few days to upwards of one week. However, there’s no reason to hide out at home or not partake in your normal daily activities.

Yes, SkinPen microneedling is one of the most effective ways to improve the appearance of acne scars. Depending on their depth, color, and age, we will recommend the best version of microneedling to use for your skin. By creating new collagen deep within the skin, the scars ‘plump up’ and fade so that they are less noticeable.

We always perform SkinPen microneedling with topical numbing cream, which helps make the treatment more comfortable. Your skin will be numbed before the treatment so that there's less feeling as your provider performs the treatment. Post-microneedling, there shouldn't be any pain or discomfort.
Some patients break out after microneedling, and if your skin is prone to pimples, let your provider know before starting the treatment. This way, we can avoid treating any active lesions under the skin and on its surface. Avoid using heavy occlusive ingredients post-treatment if you are prone to breakouts. Gentle hydrators are best in this situation.

Generally, there are no risks associated with microneedling as long as it is performed safely and by a professional. However, if it is not performed correctly by an experienced professional, there is more risk for infections, bruising, and hyperpigmentation.
